The Perfect Start

Although a lot of planning which is an ongoing process Leg 1 of the walk will be as follows (date to be confirmed) - Southport to Aintree Racecourse

Well, we have decided on the first leg of our walk. The destination will be Aintree Racecourse for Grand National day but the question was where to start?

We will start with a shortish route for the first leg and will be heading off from Red Rum's old yard in Southport behind Ginger McCain's old car showroom.

They still trade as McCains of Birkdale. They became established selling Motor Cars from their Upper Aughton road premises over 58 years ago. The business was founded by Donald (Ginger) McCain the racehorse trainer who trained the legendary Red Rum to win 3 Grand Nationals and be second twice all within a five-year period 1973-1977. This amazing feat has never been repeated and racing scholars believe it will remain so. Red Rum was trained on Southport sands and was stabled in the yard behind the car showroom in Upper Aughton Road along with 21 other racehorses.
